NET Forum

Examinations are conducted to evaluate a person of his knowledge or ability. There are different types of examinations like qualifying or competitive exams. Qualifying exams are conducted to evaluate certain kind of knowledge or skills; they are decided as per the course. After completing a particular course or during the course these exams are conducted. Here the numbers of students are limited. Competitive exams are conducted either to qualify a candidate for a particular course or to give entry into the institution. Competitive exams are also conducted for selecting a person for a job. Clearing a Competitive exam will help a person to enter into his Dream College or institution or to pursue his dream job. Some of the major institutions of government conducts these examinations. To clear these exams dedicated efforts along with certain soft skills are required. One should have clear knowledge of one‘s goals, should know how to use time effectively for getting success in competitive exams.

USTM is imparting free coaching for National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET), Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE), Banking, Staff Selection Commission (SSC) and other allied services for the students of USTM.

National and State Eligibility Test (NET/SET)

  • National Eligibility Test (NET) was introduced by the University Grants Commission for bringing Uniformity in the qualification of college teachers and research students. The first National Eligibility Test (NET) was conducted by University Grants commission in December 1989 and in March 1990 commonly to both Lectureship and Junior Research fellowship in two parts. National Eligibility Test is generally conducted twice a year in the month of June and December. The UGC-CSIR NET for the science subjects such as Life sciences, Physical sciences, Chemical sciences, Mathematical sciences and Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and planetary sciences are conducted by Council of scientific and industrial Research (CSIR) jointly with UGC. The notification for the same will be issued separately by Council of scientific and industrial Research (CSIR). The eligibility criteria for these exams is a candidate must have a master‘s degree with minimum 55%. The scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/ Physically handicapped (PH) who have secured at least 50% in Master‘s degree examination are eligible for this test.

 

Examination Pattern

There are three papers, Paper I is common for all subjects. The questions are objective based with multiple options. Paper II and Paper III is subject based. The same pattern is followed in the State Eligibility Test.

 

After the admissions are over for a particular year, a counseling session is being conducted in the month of August every year for the newly admitted students of the University for All the Departments. The main purpose of conducting the counseling session is to guide and identify the students interested for various academic activities. The students who are found to be interested for appearing in different competitive examinations and are willing to join the FREE UGC-CSIR NET COACHING  provided at the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya, are identified and listed out. To encourage the students to attend the NET Classes, the University offers refreshment after the class hours along with Free Transportation.

To bring the entire process of NET Coaching in a particular structure, the NET Forum of the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya is constituted.

The entire NET Forum operates under the expert supervision and guidance of the Hon’ble Chancellor, Shri  Mahbubul Hoque.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE NET FORUM:

  • The first and foremost responsibility of the NET Forum is to appoint NET Coordinators (Faculties who are NET Qualified and well versed with the current NET Syllabus) from each and every department of the University.

  • After the selection of the NET Coordinators, a meeting is conducted to explain the roles and responsibilities to them, which is to be followed throughout the session for the smooth functioning of the forum.

 

The following points were discussed in the meeting with NET Coordinators:

  1. A minimum of 60 (Sixty) sessions (one session comprising of a 1.5 hr class) should be conducted by each department.
  2. NET Qualified faculties need to be identified in the department and will have to conduct NET Classes mandatorily.
  3. NET Classes can be conducted during the morning hours based on the feasibility of the faculty members and the students and also during Holidays and Sundays.
  4. Faculties from the department who are not NET qualified, but well versed with the updated NET Syllabus can be allowed to take classes.
  5. Faculty members conducting NET Classes will have to make sure that, after completion of a particular Unit/Topic, NET Questions from the past 2-3 years should be discussed with proper understanding.
  6. The NET Coordinators should approach Resource Persons from different institutions considering their expertise and should continuously monitor the effectiveness of the NET Classes.
  7. If a Department is able to cover the targeted number of classes in a particular week on Holidays and Sundays, then that particular department need not conduct any NET class in the entire week. This aspect can also be taken into consideration.
  8. NET Coordinators will have to submit a One Page Information mentioning their Plan Of Action to conduct 60 (Sixty) sessions along with the names of NET Qualified and None NET Qualified faculties present in the department and their consent to conduct NET Classes.
  9. NET Coordinators should also take an undertaking from the students attending NET Classes, in order to make them accountable in case of absence.

 

  • The NET Forum has to make sure that notifications are issued on time regarding the UGC-CSIR NET Exam dates and should be properly displayed in all notice boards of the University.
  • The Forum also have to make all necessary arrangements at the University computer labs to help the students in filling up their online NET application forms.
  • The NET Forum has to make sure that the commencement of NET Classes should be within the second week of January and the second week of July every year, for both the sessions.

 

Keeping in view the Job responsibilities assigned to the NET Coordinators, a remuneration of Rs 2000/- (Two Thousand Only) is offered to them on a monthly basis. Besides this, the internal faculties are offered an honorarium of Rs 1000/- (One Thousand Only) and the Resource Person are offered an amount of Rs 2000/- (Two Thousand Only), for every NET Class conducted per session.
