Academic Focus:
Since its inception in 2013, the Department of English of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya fosters to promote academic excellence in the areas of English literature, Linguistics and English language teaching. The Department also encourages unique research activities in variegated areas that reflect the diversity of the place in which the University is located. The Department has a dedicated team of experienced teachers who are committed to uplift students to imbibe the values of Hard work, Dedication and Discipline for their overall development. The Department aims to build our students into responsible citizens with a vision of asserting human values and integrity for the welfare of the society. The Department endeavors to create a hub of Intellectual Distinction through the pursuit of Knowledge and Research. The Department makes an attempt to empower the classes with tutorials for a better teaching-learning scenario with extra-curricular activities centering around Seminars, Film Screening, Group Discussions and Debates.
The Department offers B.A. in English for the eligible students who have passed H.S. (10+2) in any stream with 45% marks in aggregate (5% relaxation for reserved categories). The duration of the course is 4 years (as per NEP syllabus). The admission fee is Rs. 40,000 and tuition fee per semester is Rs. 40,000.
The Department also offer M.A. in English for the eligible students who have graduated in English securing 45% marks in aggregate (5% relaxation for reserved categories). The duration of the course is 2 years. The admission fee is Rs. 50,000 and tuition fee per semester is Rs. 45,000.
After successful completion of the courses, students will be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of major literary movements, genres, authors, and critical theories across British, American, Indian, and World Literatures, critically analyze texts using appropriate literary and theoretical frameworks, developing interpretive and analytical skills. They will also develop effective communication skills in English through reading, writing, speaking, and presentation activities, suited for both academic and professional contexts. As per NEP 2020 curriculum, the students are offered to opt for interdisciplinary perspectives by connecting literature with History, Philosophy, Psychology, Gender Studies, and Cultural Studies. The course will also prepare the students for diverse career paths including Teaching, Publishing Houses, Creative Writing, Journalism, Media, Public Relations, and Civil Services.
The Specializations offered by the Department are Indian Writing in English, American Literature, Language Documentation and Linguistic Fieldwork, Cultural Studies and Literary Representation, African Literature, Post- Colonial Literature, Society, Polity and Literature, Children’s Literature, Film Studies, Literature in Translation (which covers works originally written in regional languages especially North-Eastern languages). Dissertation is also incorporated in the final semester of this program to enable the students for a better understanding of research process.
University of Science and Technology Meghalaya also provides Ph. D course in English. The shortlisted candidates are required to appear for a compulsory written test, and an interview. The Department comprises of faculty members who are experts in diverse specializations such as American Literature, Indian Literature, Linguistics, and English Language Teaching. The admission fee is Rs. 80,000 and tuition fee per semester is Rs. 40,000.
University of Science and Technology Meghalaya took a rigorous initiative of providing free NET/SLET/GATE classes to the future aspirants of the University whereby they get their desired orientation within the campus. The Department has a library consisting of books from different genres and languages. Language lab facility is also provided to the students for enhancing their proficiency in the subject.
The Department of English has an active and vibrant theatre and literary societies- NATYAROOPAM and WORD WEAVERS where the students are provided a platform to showcase their talents and skills.
