WORLD EARTH DAY OBSERVATION AT USTM
Mr. Aibanshngain Swer, Director, Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), Government of Meghalaya, delivering the keynote address virtually on the occasion.
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 22nd April 2021: The Department of Earth Science, University of Science & Technology Meghalaya observed the Earth Day 2021 on the theme “Restore our Earth” today at the university campus with great enthusiasm. The program which was observed in virtual mode was attended by the faculties and students of the university along with a galaxy of eminent personalities. Mr. Aibanshngain Swer, Director, Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA), Government of Meghalaya was present as the Chief Guest.
Mr. Aibanshngain Swer, while addressing as the keynote speaker in the program stressed on the status and condition of the earth and how the human being has taken control of the planet and destroying it. He also stressed on the worrisome fact of shifting or abandoning of agrarian nature of the tribal people. He also spoke about the fact of abundance of rainfall in the state of Meghalaya and the potential of conserving the rainwater.
It was followed by a speech by Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, USTM. He highlighted the important roles played by the educational institutions in the process of earth restoration. Prof. G.D. Sharma also pointed out that educational institutions can conduct various awareness programmes and also collaborate with various institutions like NGOs, Scientific Research Institutions and villages to collectively improve the condition of our planet.
It was followed by a speech by Prof. R.K. Sharma, Advisor, USTM, who expressed his concerns over the disappearance of many medicinal plants and spoke about the importance of conserving them for the benefits of the future generation.
The program ended with the vote of thanks which was provided by Dr. Palme Borthakur, Assistant Professor, Department of Earth Science, USTM.
