Workshop on “Food Quality & Safety Management for export of Processed Foods” held at USTM
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 17th February 2021: A one day workshop on “Food Quality & Safety Management for export of Processed Foods” was held at the NKC auditorium of USTM on 17th February,2021 organized jointly by the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), USTM & Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Activity (APEDA). The Chief Guest for the event was Professor G.D.Sharma, Vice Chancellor USTM. Other dignitaries for inauguration were Mrs.Sunita Rai, AGM & Regional Manager APEDA, Dr. R.K. Sarma, Advisor, USTM, Dr. A.H.Barbhuiya, Academic Registrar USTM & Dr. Goutam Das, Assistant Professor, IIFPT. The event was presided over and led by Dr. Saiyyad Alamdar Husain, Dr.Sony Kumari, Dr. Deboja Sharma and other faculty members of Applied Biology Departments of USTM. The NE region of India is rich in cultivation of food products, particularly perishable foods. The purpose of this workshop was to enlighten entrepreneurs, students & other potential candidates on the importance of processing & packaging food products including fresh fruits & vegetables for export purposes. In the inauguration session, Sunita Rai highlighted on the necessity of traceability system & pack houses for exporting food products. She further added that NE India has a lot of challenges but this is bound to open better opportunities. Dr. Goutam Das stressed on the fact that food processing is a competitive sector because over the last years, this field has grown potentially. He said that if a country’s young entrepreneurs are dynamic & have the ability of lead, the country can progress tremendously. Professor G.D. Sharma & Dr. R.K. Sarma also related their own experiences & ideas regarding food processing & innovative food products.
The day covered different technical sessions by the experts from CFTRI, FSSAI Guwahati, IIFPT etc. on the logistics & management for the export of fresh & processed agricultural products,food safety standards & managements, food quality etc. The different speakers of the technical session also discussed the different politics and schemes for the establishment of Food Processing Unit. This workshop can surely provide the required guidelines & adequate knowledge to the potential entrepreneurs & interested youngsters or students for the export of food products, their quality & safety management.
