9th Mile, Ri Bhoi, February 4, 2022: Students of the Zoology department of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya have recently celebrated “World Wetland Day” by organising awareness activities about the ecological aspects of wetlands along with various environmental concerns and issues at the Deepar Beel Wildlife Sanctuary in Guwahati. Senior professors of the Zoology Department delivered talks on the significance of wetlands as one of the major ecosystems of the world upholding and providing immense volumes of habitat and food to various endemic and migratory flora and fauna. The students were taken for Bird Walk where they observed and identified birds of wetlands with key identification guide books. This programme was followed by a phone photography competition among students to widen their horizons of imagination in various forms of nature.
The day ended with a cleanliness drive in and around the banks of the wetland to raise consciousness among the general public about conservation and restoration of resources of wetland for maintaining the ecological integrity in keeping these natural reserves clean and green.
