USTM Observes World Environment Day-2021

Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 5th June 2021: The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya in collaboration with Dispur College, Guwahati together observed the World Environment Day 2021 on 5th June 2021 on the Theme “Ecosystem Restoration”. The programme was observed in the virtual platform in presence of many important personalities, Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, USTM, Dr. R.K. Sharma, Chief Advisor USTM, Prof. Ajit Kumar Das, Head Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar, Dr. Laxmikanta Padhi, Head Department of Philosohy, University of North Bengal, Siliguri, Dr. Rani Mudiar Deka, Vice Principal, Dispur College and Dr. Amar Saikia, Principal, Dispur College and Head of Departments and faculties member and students of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya.

Dr. Laxmikanta Padhi in his speech highlighted the connection of environmental ethics and environmental degradation. he pointed to the role played by ethics in solving environmental problems. He also mentioned about the importance of extending the moral rights to the plants and animals as they also formed very integral part of our environment.

Prof. Ajit Kumar Das pointed out that time is very urgent for us to focus on the restoration of nature. He points to the various activities which leads to the degradation of nature and our duties to conserve it. He also stressed on the various benefits that human can benefit when choosing to restore the ecology of the area.

Dr. Rani Mudiar Deka highlighted on the importance of human being to be kind and loyal to the environment. She also mentioned the importance of the contribution of a single individual level in restoration. She also mentioned that restoration is on way of marching to complete the Sustainable Development Goal.

Prof. G.D. Sharma in his speech called upon the participation and collaboration of various individuals and organization for successful conservation of our environment. He also briefs about the importance of inoculation of the subject in the degree level of various courses in studies and how its major contribution in imparting knowledge about the environment. Prof. G.D. Sharma also mentioned about the benefits that human can enjoy from the services of a healthy ecosystem.
