Involvement of University in Research for the Country is very important: Meghalaya CM
Shillong, August 2, 2018: The University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya in association with ERD Foundation, Guwahati has felicitated all the 40 rank holder students of SSLC 2018 under MBOSE here today. The awards were handed over by the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma along with Dr DD Lapang, Hon’ble Former CM of Meghalaya, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and other dignitaries. The programme was attended by many other dignitaries, high officials as well as school principals, parents and guardians of the rank holding students. The successful students were honoured with Laptops, Mementos and other attractive rewards.
Delivering the awards to the toppers, Chief Minister Sangma said, “Involvement of university in research in the highest level for the country is very important.” Thanking Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque and the entire USTM team for its gesture of honouring the rank holders, he said that institutions like USTM have a big role to play in research in climate change and GST which will further contribute to policy making. “In Meghalaya, we are ready to complete the formulation of our education policy for the first time in the State”, he added.
Dr DD Lapang, the Former CM of Meghalaya said that he is glad for the performance of the students. Referring to Dr BR Ambedkar, he said that merit speaks louder than wealth. Addressing the award winning students, he said, “No one can prevent if you decide to be great. Please shine your way and light wherever you go.” Speaking on the occasion, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said, “This is a unique programme where a university has recognised the hard work of the students”.
Earlier, welcoming the gathering, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM said that USTM is committed to the development of science and technology education and research in the region and announced that USTM is offering free education to all the toppers of MBOSE after they pass higher secondary. The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Prof Alaka Sarma, Pro Vice Chancellor of USTM.
