Three Days National Level Online Workshop For UG And PG Students

Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 28th June 2021: The Dept. of Mathematics of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has organised a Three Days National Level Online Workshop for UG and PG Students in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG), which was commenced on 28th June 2021 and ended on 30th June 2021. The workshop was graced with the presence of Chairman ERDF and Chancellor USTM Shri Mahbubul Hoque, and Vice Chancellor of USTM Prof. G.D. Sharma.

The welcome inaugural speech was delivered by the HoD of Dept. of Mathematics, USTM Associate Professor (Dr.) Gitumani Sarma, and speech by aforementioned personals with Principal Advisor USTM Dr. R.K. Sharma, Dean School of Applied Sciences Prof. E. Karim, HoD of Dept of Mathematics IITG Dr. Kalpesh Kapoor and four Resource Persons viz, Dr. Bikash Bhattacharjya Associate Professor IITG, Dr. Bhupen Deka Associate Professor IITG, Dr. Rupam Barman Associate Professor IITG, and Dr. Pratyoosh Kumar Assistant Professor IITG, all from Dept. of Mathematics IITG.

The workshop comprised of six sessions (two sessions each day), each session of 2 hours. The main objective or aim of the workshop is to uplift the concept of some broad areas of Mathematics that are very important for various entrance exams that are necessary for a student’s higher studies as well as to know the subject in depth.

The day-I mapped to Dr. Bikash Bhattacharjya for session-I and Dr. Rupam Burman for session-II. Dr. Bhattacharjya dealt with brief description of Spectral Theory from Linear Algebra whilst Dr. Burman started with some preliminary concepts and results of abstract algebra including group theory which eventually led to some exquisite topics of the same.

There were two sessions on the second day. The morning session began with a talk of Dr. BhupenDeka, Associate professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati. He delivered a lecture on Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE). In this session, he introduced the concept of First Order Linear ODE, solution space, general solution and particular solution. He also discussed the sufficient condition for the condition for the existence of solution of first orders linear ODE.

The afternoon session was dedicated to Real Analysis. In this session our guest speaker war Dr. Pratyoosh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati. He discussed the topics like Least Upper Bound Properties, Archimedean property and its application to proof theorems like BolzanoWeirestrass Theorem, to check limit point of a set. He also covered the topics like open set, closed set, interior point, sequence and Cauchy sequence, nested interval theorem. He has concluded his session by introducing Completeness Theorem of Real.

On the third Day of the workshop, we had two sessions and two talks were delivered by the resource persons.
The first talk was delivered by Dr. Bhupen Deka, associate professor, Department of mathematics, IITG. He talked about difference between linear and non linear differential equations, existence and uniqueness, Picard’s theorem, homogeneous and non homogeneous DE ,how to find the general solutions and particular solutions etc. Dr. Deka has discussed about some problems appeared in GATE exam and provide the name of some books on Differential Equations.

In the second technical session of Day 3 Dr. Rupam Barman Sir, associate Professor Department of Mathematics, IITG delivered his talk on Algebra. He discussed about Matrix group, Group of Isometric and isomorphism. Dr. Barman also provided the lists of some books on Abstract Algebra for the benefits of the participants.
