September 21, 2017, USTM: University of Science and Technology Meghalaya had observed International Peace Day in a unique way. The program was organised jointly by ERD Foundation and COVA Network. The spiritual leaders from different sects had gathered at USTM Techno City Campus today to take a pledge against all those forces that try to thwart peace and create unrest in the NE Region for the sake of some ulterior motive.
It can be mentioned that USTM has always played a pivotal role in becoming a symbol of national integration where the students of all NE states belonging to all religion, caste and creed have stayed together in the campus and studied together under one roof. This year United Nations had taken a resolution on the International Peace Day to combat against all forces that dampen the spirit of global solidarity and thus posing an obstacle for building a peaceful and sustainable world.
While addressing a gathering of avid students, intellectuals, activists, Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM and Chairman, ERDF stated “We talk about environmental issues like global warming, climate change etc, but we never express our concern on humanitarian issues like innocent killings, genocide, violence, unrest perpetrated by the fanatic groups not just in our country, all over the world or when human values at stake. Violence, hatred stand opposed to peace, is global phenomenon and it is not restricted within one particular region or groups. Everyday, new forces of division have been on the increase, spearheading hatred and intolerance and fuelling terrorism. If our neighboring countries always try to encroach our boundaries, despite having all the amenities of life, we cannot live in peace. Peace is an understanding which needs to be developed in the mind set of the people, it is a concept which helps people to know each other, to realize the importance of universal brotherhood”.
Sh. Hoque made a fervent appeal to the people of this country that they must come forward to maintain peace in the region and work together for the wholesome development of the NE Region and the entire country as a whole. The campaign for ‘Peace now and Forever’ which began today at USTM Techno City Campus will be continued till the time it is achieved.
