2nd March, 2017, USTM, Meghalaya : On the occasion of National Science Day celebration 28th Feb, 2017, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST) in association with Cotton College State University (CCSU) had organized Science Model Exhibition at IASST Campus. Around fifty educational institutions from Assam had participated in the exhibition. As a token of reverence to Dr. C V Raman, the nobel laureate scientist, the exhibition was conducted to encourage innovation, scientific temper and spirit amongst the young generation, specifically the students’ fraternity. The valedictory session was organized on 1st march, 2017 and the results of the science model competition was declared.
Noteworthy to mention that the students of the Department of Applied Biology, University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) & Regional Institute of Science & Technology (RIST) had bagged all three prizes. USTM & RIST, the two flagship institutions working under the auspices of ERD Foundation, Guwahati had always encouraged its students to do something innovative which would leave a mark of their own distinction in the field of science and technology.
The first prize was won by the team led by Paras Moni Goswami of the department of Applied Biology, USTM. The theme of their presentation was focused on “Waste Water Treatment Plant’ which signified the ways to recycle the waste water and how it can be used as a source of hydro-electricity and bio-fuel production.
The second prize had gone to 5-members’ team comprising Taba Tallo, Moumita Debnath, Suma K Marak, Ijhar Sheikh and Mousumi Deb from EEE, 8th Semester, RIST. The model name was Automatic Vehicle Headlamp control using LDR and its speciality lies in the fact accidents can be minimized by avoiding glares for the other drivers and making obstacles visible in the path ways between the parking space and the approaching car. It saves energy by way of changing automatically the headlamp between high beam and low beam, it is also cost-effective. The third model presented by Duncam Sharma was “Self Stabilized Quadcopter” using this apparatus aerial video surveylliance can be done through remote control, videography for movie making, institutional purpose etc can be done in a cost-effective manner. It can also reduce human fatalities and can be operated on battery eliminating the usage of conventional fuels.
