RED CROSS DAY OBSERVED AT USTM
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 8th May 2021: The Department of Social Work, University of Science & Technology Meghalaya observed the World Red Cross Day 2021 on the theme “Together we are unstoppable” today at the university campus with great enthusiasm. The program which was observed in virtual mode was attended by the faculties and students of the university along with personalities. Prof. Dr. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, USTM was present as the Chief Guest.
Prof. Dr. G.D. Sharma, addressing as the keynote speaker in the program stressed on the status and present practice of International Red Cross Society during the current pandemic situation with the help of 700 branches in India. Red Cross Societies through their humanitarian activities on behalf of prisoners of war and combatants, had attracted millions of volunteers and built a large body of expertise and always ready to help for the victims of natural disasters , manmade disasters through the international networking of support system. Indian Red Cross Society took a vital part during the Gujarat Earthquake, different draught situations arises at different time, and in recent Covid-19 pandemic through creating blood bank, creating awareness, providing medical help, supply of medicine, and most importantly all help from outside and inside the nation is channelized trough Red Cross Societies. Respected speaker emphasized on the different kinds of efforts to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 in terms of medical, financial and other supports.
It was followed by a speech by Dr. Girimallika Sharma, HoD, Department of Social Work, USTM. She highlighted the important roles played by the Henry Dunant in formation of Red Cross Society and announces the Poster Competition among the student with the theme “Awareness and Precautionary Measures of Covid-19 Pandemic”
The program ended with the vote of thanks provided by Dr. Nibedita Paul, Associate Professor, Department of Social Work, USTM.
