Guwahati, July 29 2017: At a gala ceremony, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) hosted University Public Relations Day at Hotel Landmark, Guwahati on 29th July, 2017. The purpose of this program was to recognize immense contribution laid by the media professionals for catalyzing social change, giving legitimacy to people’s voice through media disseminations and thus strengthening the role of media as “third estate”. The day was marked by award felicitation of eminent media personalities, announcement of several educational schemes for the media to be implemented by Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF), award distribution program of 2nd North East College Magazine competition and presentation of USTM Report Card for the year gone by.
Speaking at the event Mr. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM and Chairman of ERD Foundation stated, “The USTM PR Day is a special event organized for our media fraternity where we take the opportunity to recognize the efforts of media professionals, reporters across the region and their contribution in making unbiased coverage, truthful news reporting and thus to bring to light all the discrepancies lying within may be government policies or any decision making process by the government or any such unprecedented happenings throughout the country’. We strongly feel that journalists play a very important role in bringing about a change in the society. We also take this opportunity to share our achievements in the past one year” – he added.
The chief guest of the program, Shri R.S. Mooshahary, Former Governor of Meghalaya, while addressing the audience reminded the usefulness of quality education “ the standard of education being imparted in a country largely determines the quality of citizens of that country. If we give them good education, we will get good citizens”. He had also urged the people to be watchful about the quality of education being provided by different institutions and see the norms of operations are maintained. Amongst others were present Shri Dhiraj Bora, VC, ASTU and Prof N.K. Chaudhury, Principal Adviser, ERDF.
Media personalities felicitated in the event were Nitumoni Saikia (Editor in Chief, Pratidin Times), Prasanta Rajguru (Executive Editor, Amar Axom), Snigdha Sikha Borah (DY 365), Chaya Moni Bhuyan (Political Editor, News Live), Nasreen Habib (Editor, Eclectic), Mamta Misra (The Assam Tribune), Bireshwar Das (Dainik Jugasankha) and Ms. Emilo Konyak (Correspondent, Nagaland Post).
The Awards distribution program for the 2nd North East College Magazine competition was also held. Under the Best Magazine category the first three prizes were bagged by Alochani by Digboi College, Jabian by J.B. College and Lakhimpur Girls College Magazine by Lakhimpur Girls College respectively.
Cottonian by Cotton College was adjudged the Best Cover category, Manash Pratim Rajbanshi, a 4th Semester student of Nalbari College won the award for his article Moraha Fulor Xubah under the Best Article category. Dipsikha Baruah of Digboi College won the Best Woman Editor award, Priyanka Nath, 6th Semester student of K.C Das Commerce College Best Woman Writer award for her article Nishigandha. MOSAIC 2016 of St Anthony’s College Shillong, Meghalaya and RENDEZVOUS 16 of Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, Nagaland bagged the Special Jury Award.
Later, the chairman of ERD Foundation Shri M. Hoque had announced some educational schemes for media friends.
