One-Day National webinar on Laser Cooling of Atoms and its Application in Quantum Technologies
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 2nd July 2021: The Department of Physics, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya has organized One-Day National webinar on “Laser Cooling of Atoms and its Application in Quantum Technologies”. The webinar was organized on the online platform, ZOOM application. The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Sanchita Roy, HoD of the Department of Physics. She has briefly introduced about the phenomenon of Laser cooling. This was followed by a speech from Prof. G.D. Sharma, honourable vice-chancellor of USTM. He briefed about the importance of Laser technologies in the modern era. It was followed by a speech by Dr. R.K. Sharma, principal advisor, USTM.
The invited speaker of the webinar, Dr. Kanhaiya Pandey, an eminent researcher from the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati presented his talk on the topic “Laser Cooling of Atoms and its Application in Quantum Technologies”. He initiated his talk by explaing the basics of Laser action followed by his experimental results. Dr. Pandey has explained how Laser technology can be used to cool the atoms to a very low temperature e.g. up to a level of micro-Kalvin. The idea was based upon the momentum transfer from the light quanta to atoms, Doppler effect and the velocity distribution of atoms in the sample. He has theoretically explained and experimentally shown how atoms can be cooled and also trapped using Laser technique. Indeed, one of his results was very interesting where he has shown experimentally the well known phenomenon, Bose-Einstein condensation. The Bose-Einstein phenomenon is a very low temperature phenomenon. He has shown how bosons are condensed in a very tiny region and fermions are not even at the same temperature. He also shed light on the quantum computing and explained the importance of laser technology in quantum computing. The talk was very beneficial specially for UG and PG students.
A good number of participants from different Institutes/Universities across the nation have joined the webinar. The whole webinar was moderated by Dr. Enamullah, coordinated by Ms. Devashree Borgohain and the concluding remarks were presented by Dr. H. P. Jaisi.
