National Science Day observed at USTM

A book titled “Children’s Academic Achievement – Role of Home & School” written by Dr. Saru Joshi was released on the occasion of National Science Day

Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 27th February 2021: As the whole nation is going to celebrate National Science Day tomorrow, the Department of Zoology, University of Science and Technology Meghalaya has celebrated it today itself in advance as the University will remain closed on 28th February 2021 due to Sunday. This day is being celebrated in India every year in commemoration of Nobel Laureate Sir C. V. Raman’s landmark discovery of the Raman Effect on 28th February, 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics later in 1930. The focal theme of National Science Day-2021 was “Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills and Work”.

The event which was held at the USTM campus began with a floral tribute to Sir C.V. Raman. With the spirit of the celebration, a Powerpoint presentation competition followed by a quiz competition was held which was enthusiastically participated by the students of USTM and RIST.

The welcome address was given by Dr. Dipankar Dutta, HoD, Department of Zoology, USTM which was followed by the keynote address by Prof. G.D. Sharma, Hon’ble VC, USTM. He spoke about the strong determination power of Sir C.V. Raman, and urged all the students to inculcate it in their hearts. In his speech, he highlighted how the strong will power and interest helped Sir C.V. Raman to carry out his research in a period where no sophisticated instruments, modern facilities and additional funding were available. Addressing the audience on the occasion, Prof. Sharma said, “ Interest and Curiosity are the foremost factors required to achieve any big thing.” “When there is a will, there is a way”, he added. It was followed by a couple of short speeches by Dr. R.K. Sharma, Advisor, USTM and Dr. B.K. Das, Director (admin), USTM respectively.

On the occasion, a book titled “Children’s Academic Achievement-Role of Home and School” written by Dr. Saru Joshi, Associate Professor, PQHSE, USTM was formally released after which prizes were distributed to the various winners of the presentation and quiz competitions held in the morning. The celebration came to an end with the vote of thanks which was provided by Dr. A.H Barbhuyan, Academic Registrar, USTM.
