International Conference on ‘Sociology of Social Media’ held at USTM
Prof. Abdul Matin, Former Professor, AMU and President, FLAIR delivering the keynote address at the International Conference on Sociology of Social Media held at USTM
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 3rd April 2021: An International Conference on ‘Sociology of Social Media’ organized by USTM in association with FLAIR was held today at the USTM campus in presence of a galaxy of dignitaries. The event which was formally inaugurated by lightening of ‘diya’ started with a welcome speech by Prof. A C Talukdar, Dean, School of Social Science and Humanities, USTM and was followed by the presidential address by Prof. G.D. Sharma, VC, USTM. Addressing the dignitaries attending the conference, Prof. Sharma said, “Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram have revolutionized the social interaction process and communication system between the people.” After that, the keynote address was delivered by Prof. Abdul Matin, Former Professor, AMU and President, FLAIR. “Nearly 60% of the total population on the Earth is active on social media”, Prof. Matin mentioned. “However the amount of time people spend online per year varies from country to country”, he added. It was followed by a thought provoking speech by the Guest of Honour Prof. Velikaya Natalia Mikhailovna, Deputy Director, Federal Research Sociological Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia. The Chief Guest of the event Prof. Shalendra Sharma, Chair Professor, Lingnan University, Hong Kong, also delivered a speech on the merits and demerits of social media and its impact on the society. The vote of thanks was given by Dr. N. Purkayastha, HoD, Department of Sociology, USTM. The event came to an end with a series of technical sessions.
