International Conference on Sociology of Education in the time of Covid-19 Pandemic
Baridua, 9th Mile, Meghalaya, 11th August 2021: International Conference on Sociology of Education in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the prevailing second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, it was decided to organize this conference in ONLINE MODE. After the due approval from the USTM administration, the Department of Sociology organized a one-day International Conference on Sociology of Education in the time of Covid-19 pandemic in association with the Department of Sociology, University of Lucknow.
For this conference, a total of 113 participants got registered before the deadline of abstract submission, and finally, 94 persons/scholars presented their research papers at the conference. These paper presenters were from different parts of India, and many participants in the conference were even from outside.
Many renowned educationists, sociologists and academicians attended the conference as resource persons. Prof Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia (A Central University), New Delhi, honoured us to be the Chief Guest of the conference. On the other hand, Prof Meenakshi Thapan, Retired Professor, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi, delivered the conference’s keynote address. Prof. D R Sahu from the Department of Sociology, University of Lucknow, Lucknow, was the Guest of Honour of the conference. At the same time, Prof B P Sahu (NEHU, Shillong) and Deepak Mane (Tata Consultancy Services) also addressed the conference as the guest of honour and invited speaker, respectively. At the end of the day, Prof Chandan Kumar Sharma, Tezpur University, Tezpur, graced the valedictory function of the conference as the Chief Guest.
A total of five technical sessions (two parallel technical sessions started at 12 noon & three parallel technical sessions started at 2 p.m.) were conducted at the conference in which 94 research papers were presented. The majority of the conference papers focused on the impact of the Covid- 19 pandemic on the education sector. A varied range of issues was tried to explore through different research papers in the conference. Be it the school education sector or higher education sector, their problems, issues and challenges were discussed in the conference. The papers presented in different technical sessions focused mainly on the online-offline debate in education, issues related to the digital divide, MOOC courses, etc. Many papers also tried to explore the socio-psychological dimensions of the pandemic and online education. The paper presenters and the participants of the conference represent different institutions of excellence. The organizing committee of the conference has decided to publish the papers in the form of edited books.
