USTM & BUHS signed MoU to kick
start regional cooperation in diabetes care

GUWAHATI, MARCH 16, 2015: University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM)
in association with Cotton College State University; Assam Down Town University
(ADTU); CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat; and Asian Network of Research in Anti-Diabetic
Plants (ANRAP), Dhaka organised a Public Lecture on “Herbal Medicines and
Diabetic Care: an experience and success story from Bangladesh” at Srimanta
Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Sunday.
A team of 35 scientists and academicians from Bangladesh University of Health
Sciences (BUHS) and Bangladesh Institute of Research & Rehabilitation in
Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) , Dhaka led by Prof Liaquat
Ali, Vice Chancellor, BUHS graced the occasion and interacted with doctors,
researchers, patients and the academic fraternity from greater Guwahati to
apprise them about the recent findings of research work on effectiveness of
herbal medicines for diabetic treatment.
A sizable number of participants attended the lecture from various hospitals,
institutes, and academic circles of Guwahati. The talk resulted in fruitful
interaction between the speakers and the various students, doctors and patients
who attended it.
On the sidelines of the Public Lecture, an MoU was also signed between USTM and
BUHS wherein both the universities resolved to cooperate with each other in
advanced research of health and biological sciences in the days to come. The MoU
was signed by Mahbubul Hoque Chancellor, USTM, on behalf of USTM and by Dr
Liaquat Ali, Vice Chancellor, BUHS on behalf of BUHS in the presence of the team
from Bangladesh; Dr N K Choudhury, Principal Advisor, ERDF and former VC, GU; Dr
Dhrubajyoti Saikia, VC, Cotton College State University; Dr P G Rao, Vice
Chancellor, USTM; Dr B P Sharma, Professor Govt Ayurvedic College Guwahati and
other high officials of USTM. The MoU decrees the exchange of faculty, students,
and administrators between the universities. Both USTM and BUHS will facilitate
visits and interchange of research staff for research, development, and teaching
purposes.
It may not be out of place to mention that USTM was established under the
provisions of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya Act (No. 6 of
2008) enacted by Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya and today it offers under
graduate and post graduate courses in different subjects like biotechnology,
zoology, botany, chemistry, mathematics, environmental science, computer science
& applications, electronics, commerce, business administration, economics,
English, sociology, social work, public administration, education, library &
information science, geology, geography, and rural development, etc. It has
enacted MoUs with several national and international universities and
institutions for collaboration in R&D activities.
On the other hand, BUHS strives to create multidisciplinary environment in
biomedical research involving biological, chemical, clinical as well as social
sciences as relevant to health; generate evidence based suggestions which can
help the planners and policy makers to develop better health care programmes for
the people; and ensure faster interaction among relevant institutes/universities
at home and abroad to improve the academic and research standards in biomedical
fields.
