RIST and USTM observed National Education Day

Techno city, Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya, 13 November 2017: The only way that an
university can progress is that it must reach out to the people by bringing
innovation to teaching methods, inspiring students to do things that can
contribute to the society. This was stated by Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Vice
Chancellor, University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya while speaking on
National Education Day on 11 November to commemorate Maulana Abul Kalam Azad—the
great visionary and the architect of education system of the country. Organised
by the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) and the University of
Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) with the theme “Maulana Azad: The
Architect of Education in Modern India”, the function was participated by
hundreds of students and teachers, apart from the dignitaries.
Delivering his welcome address Prof Choudhury said, “I salute Maulana Abul Kalam
Azad for his immense contribution to the national educational scenario. We
should think about upgrading our education and be innovative and impart
cooperative teaching”. While universities were earlier considered as places of
study and research only, the present concept is that universities should produce
people who think not only about personal growth, but also try to reach out to
people, he added.
In the Keynote address, Prof. Alaka Sarma, Dean, School of Social Sciences and
Humanities, USTM said that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a great executor and
remembered that all the big educational and cultural establishments such as IIT,
UGC, Jamia Milia Islamia, Sangeet Natak Akademy, Lalit Kala Academy etc. are the
brainchild of this great visionary. “He gave great importance in building
institutions. He laid the foundation stone and streamlined the whole education
system of India”, she added.
Addressing the participants, M Hoque, Chancellor, USTM said, “We must carry
forward the mission of great personalities like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and
contribute towards development of the human resource of the country”.
A power point presentation on National Education Day was made by Dr Papiya Dutta,
HoD, Rural Development. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr RK Sharma, Pro
Vice Chancellor, USTM.
