WORKSHOP ON INITIATIVE TOWARDS BUILDING MODEL VILLAGES IN NE AT USTM

The University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya and National
Institute of Rural development & Panchayat Raj - NERC conducted a 2 days
workshop on initiative towards building model villages in NE India which was
held at NIRDPR-NERC and USTM respectively on 11 & 12 March 2016. The programme
was inaugurated by the former Chief Secretary, Govt of Assam Shri H N Das where
he highlighted the importance of building model villages and also on adoption of
sustainable strategies to strengthen the base of villages in our country. Shri
Mrinal Talukdar, the well recognized face of Journalism also graced the occasion
and presented his own experience in building up the model villages with several
constraints and ended up by saying that in order to build a model village we
should think “out of the box” but it is possible to transform all the villages
of North East region into a smart village.
Dr. R. R. Das, Director of Law Research Institute and other distinguished
representatives from several organizations like UNICEF, SIRD, SAGY, Kasturba
Ashram, NRLM, TISS etc. had participated in the workshop and came up with their
recommendations that it is the time where we should begin our journey from
“Target based” to “Need based” and emphasizes was given to make all the Rural
Development policies a “Realistic one”. The workshop has been concluded by
referring the “Gandhian Self Sufficient Village Economy Model” as the foundation
of the modern model village. The workshop also recommended that time has arrived
to boost up the villages across the country as real India can only be found in
rural India.
